I haven't seen the episode of The Price is Right that aired Thursday (I TiVo is just in case something interesting happens.) but well, this one goes in the "save" pile.

iJustine was on the show as a contestant... last person called during the opening and won the showcase! Since this episode was celebrated as the 7000th episode, she won some big prizes.

Now, broadcasters usually are not allowed to play game shows unless it's a charity special.. but there's apparently no limit to YouTube views or Twitter follower. Maybe some discussion about who's a celeb and aren't we all on this week's TWIT or Tech Guy?

I'm happy for Justine, but this stunt for ratings by the show makes me cringe.

The stunt was the 7000th episode, Justine was treated like a normal contestant.

She was treated like a normal contestant? You mean she just happened to beat the odds of making it onstage. And as a normal contestant, Drew went out of his way to mention the 600K+ followers she has. Whatever. Not saying Justine did anything wrong. However, this was hardly on the up and up, and I would feel somewhat wronged if I was in the studio and the contestants chosen was rigged in any way.

TPIR's contestant process is in fact far from random, it's based on "first impression" interviews in the line outside, including if you're the leader of a like-dressed group. (Justine had two friends wearing outfits similar to hers.)

As for the "She's a geek celeb!" argument... that's supposed to get you disqualified, not moved up. It's most likely that the contestant staff didn't know who she was, but Drew most likely saw the "iJustine" mention on her shirt and recognized her. Remember, he and Rich use Twitter heavily. The 600k follower reference occurred while they were showing the audience... leading to a possibility that was added in post-production.

There's not much ratings bump possible because there were no pre-show mentions of "Hey, iJustine will be playing on Thursday. Watch The Price Is Right on CBS!" or anything like that. There was no mention of this even on Twitter until after the episode had aired. I have a copy because I TiVo TPiR daily and hold the episodes for a week, and only watch if I find out there's something cool going on. Clearly, the Hulu/YouTube plays might go up... but that's too small a lift to care about.

If there's a foul, it's on iJustine for going to TPIR with an intent to try to be called. Celbrities are not allowed to play... late in the Barker era there were several potential hosts who sat in a certain chair in the front row, they were never considered to be allowed to play.

So, this brings me back to the original point, has the line between blogger and celeb blurred to the point that it's hard to keep straight?

I'm sure Justine was honest when being interviewed and told TPIR who she was ... they just didn't think she was enough of a celeb to be disqualified. Also, the expression on her face when she was selected says a lot ... she was shocked to be picked. I'm pretty sure that Drew recognized her from the beginning ( he is pretty tech savvy I hear ) and I would not be surprised that the situation was discussed during a break and it was decided to be a non-issue. If TPIR was trying for a "stunt" they would have made much more of a deal of who she was than Drew just mentioning she had 600k followers on Twitter ( which I saw as being on camera BTW ) or Justine saying Hi to all her internet friends. Besides, if celebrity status were really an issue , I would think that more of the general public know her as "the girl in the Mozy commercials" and if I am not mistaken, there have been several "commercial actors" as contestants before ( it is filmed in LA after all ... if you eliminate all actors you won't have any contestants left LOL ). From what I have heard about the selection process ( my former roomate's cousin has been on many game shows and even won the showcase once ) Justine's selection had more to do with the shorts she wore than who she was.

What I found funny was how Justine won. I mean she only gets on stage for the last segment because everyone else overbid, then just picks a 50/50 shot at the price of the Rolex, spins a lucky roll on the wheel and in the showcase once again wins because the other contestant overbid.

In any event, I can't wait til the next time Leo has Justine in studio to hear about it.
Reality....What a Concept

Justine also was lucky with her $1 bid because she was the third player to bid on the item. When the third player bids $1, the correct action for player four is to bid either $2 to take the "everybody else overbid" logic, or bid $1 more than the highest number to say everyone was too low. By not following this strategy, the player standing next to Justine missed a chance to trap her in Contestant's Row.

I made iJustine's mistake and horribly underestimated the cost of that Sony DSLR. $1800 sounded a little much for the specs - I had estimated $800 to her $855.
